The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
