Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
