Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor stated when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's current term as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
The California governor has emerged as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a initiative that would increase Democratic House seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. Duffy revealed plans to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested revoking the power to grant CDLs.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," Duffy stated, following a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
Duffy had previously announced he was withholding $40 million from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration responded in a previous statement addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A recently conducted study found that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he said. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the American people."
