Jujutsu Kaisen: The Execution Film Strives to Address the Anime's Most Significant Issue
JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution isn't exactly an original film. Instead, the latest cinematic release from the Jujutsu Kaisen action franchise serves as a collection of the show's sophomore season merged with the opening installments of its next season, which kicks off the Culling Games arc from the original manga. This makes Execution, which recently received a fresh preview, the first way to view the beginning of the forthcoming season ahead of its January 2026 premiere. The film debuts in Japan on Nov. 7, and in North American regions on December 5.
The Culling Games Plot
In the Culling Games storyline, Elite sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu makes his entrance into the show and is charged by sorcery authorities to execute his peer Yuji Itadori. Their long-awaited clash unfolds for the first time on the cinema screen, and if the animators at Mappa have a treat as the two-part Thunderclap episodes waiting in the wings for audiences this festive season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may prove to be the surprise that fans have anticipated.
The "Thunderclap" Controversy
"Thunderclap episodes" from season 2 is widely regarded as among the best moments in animated series lore, in spite of the major issues in the previous year when the installments originally aired. It was reported that the creators were facing tight schedules to the point, and the final version that premiered at the time was incomplete and allegedly not what the animators initially intended.
The Legendary Fight
The scene features a long-awaited battle between two powerful sorcerers, Sukuna versus Mahoraga. It boasts experimental animation, masterful camera work, and intense action. A subsequent Blu-ray release allowed the team to insert new moments to enhance the battle. So it appeared likely Execution could refine the sequence additionally. However, viewing the recent teaser, it's hard to tell if that battle has received any additional treatment. It'd be a disappointment if it hadn't, because a moment so epic has to be watched on the largest display with the best presentation possible.
Season Two's Achievement
The second installment of JuJutsu Kaisen boosted the show to become 2024's anime of the year, and when episodes 40 and 41 were aired consecutively, it was the topic of conversation for multiple weeks in the animation fandom. Fans had heard of the production challenges, which made them value what they viewed even more. People clamored to see if the Blu-ray, released on March 18, would feature extra content to the sequence or to see if it was improved in any way, and were elated to see exactly that, alongside tone adjustments, smoother movement, and revised visual style.
The Movie's Opportunity
But the Blu-ray can only improve what has already been presented in the broadcast edition, whereas the film has the chance to do the sequence justice with further changes and new animations entirely.
A Masterpiece
At present, these pair of installments represent the magnum opus of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be treated as such by the studio, particularly given the issues they underwent at the time. It's captured the interest of anime fans all over the globe, and the Culling Games storyline is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of next year. If the production company wants to kick off the year perfectly, revisit the series' best moment once again in cinemas with the finest version we've seen yet.
