Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC
The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
