New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“It is crucial to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams remarked.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has drawn interest internationally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
