The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his electoral win in November.

"This decision was based on our family's safety and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability voters supported," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
