The British driver Lando Norris Wins Debut F1 Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

With a performance full of nerveless driving, the McLaren driver has clinched his first Formula One world championship by taking third place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Third place was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri finished in second.

The driver performed exactly what was necessary in an extremely intense contest at the Abu Dhabi track, including a number of audacious overtakes, with flawless work from both himself and his McLaren squad.

To have been so competitive in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Verstappen too had been brilliant to force the title battle to the wire. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a significant deficit in August, he did not quite have the points to overhaul Norris, finishing just a handful of points behind.

Closing it Out with Ruthless Precision

Norris closed out his success with ruthless focus to win the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during tough periods, believing they would return to the top. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a hugely impressive job to stick at his task, maintaining his composure and belief during periods under the cosh. After losing the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at maximising what he could.

The Decisive Grand Prix

In the race, Verstappen kept his first place through turn one, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to take second place.

It showed the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and showed no signs of nerves in his driving.

During the race, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars at once, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, leading to a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside, nearly leaving the track.

This moment was investigated by the race officials, with several nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his championship bid.

Diverging Fortunes

As Norris was crowned the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in form between the two was stark. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Italian team had been greeted with excitement but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked jaded in the closing races and will aim to rebuild over the winter.
