The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the full story behind the encounter is detailed in the live show The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.
So, What's in the Case?
Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to gain strength.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
