The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
