The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
